There are over seven hundred students in my school, many of whom have difficulty achieving academic success due to their emotional and behavioral challenges. Over ninety-five percent qualify for free or reduced lunch and come from families that are financially and environmentally stressed.
My students are kind, sensitive, and fun-loving, yet for some these same qualities tend to create challenges for them in the classroom.
They are often missing academic instruction as a result of their social-emotional and behavioral functioning.
My students yearn for attention and want to contribute positively to our school community. They lack the social-emotional skills to understand and manage their emotions in their relationships, making it difficult for them to employ the skills needed for conflict resolution, coping, and self-regulation.
