My school is located between the cities of Bell and Cudahy, in the southern part of Los Angeles County. The majority of the students are part of 1st and 2nd generation of Latino families that have immigrated to the country to provide a better life for their relatives.
Considered a high poverty area, these kids are probably not very different from the ones that attend other schools in the vicinity. Their families have stories of struggle, that are fueled with their imperious desire to improve and the parent;s hope that the students can receive a good education that help to lift them out of poverty.
Stories like this one are all around this site, but to me, these are not only words. These are faces and stories that have touched my life as a teacher. I've seen how many of them, through music, have felt fulfillment, have enjoyed sense of belonging. I have tried to instill them sense of pride and sense of empowerment. They are capable to do whatever and they just have to believe in it!
