My speech-language students have autism, cognitive impairment or other special needs. They have a strong desire to communicate but this ability is hindered due to their delayed verbal skills.
The pictures or symbols will give my students a voice. A widely used software program which consists of thousands of symbols/pictures depicting spoken words requires a color printer for the most accurate representation. A child’s unlimited access to engaging pictures for communication and learning reduces many barriers they typically face during a school day. A color printer would give them the access they deserve and allows my speech-language students to make meaningful progress with meaningful materials.
The pictures will be compiled into a communication book or board for the purpose of requesting desired food items, favorite toys and other basic needs. Most importantly, it allows them to communicate effectively with peers and adults throughout their school day.
