I teach in a Title 1 school. This means that most of my students come from poverty and face all the challenges that brings. They are a tenacious bunch of kids, who love learning and need all the opportunities that their better-funded peers are receiving. My students come from amazingly diverse backgrounds; they are Vietnamese, Congolese, Bosnian, Mexican, Chinese, Filipino, and Ukrainian. Since so many students come from different backgrounds, the classroom is truly the melting pot where shared experiences are created.
In 6th grade students learn about ancient cultures. They have a chance to understand the underpinnings of Western culture and democracy. For a 6th grader though, the exciting part is the mythology! They have a chance to be inspired by the all-too-human gods and goddesses of the Greek pantheon.
Please help me to bring these stories into the lives of my students.
Thanks so much!
