Scholastic News is a great nonfiction/current events magazine made to interest fifth graders. Providing this resource to my students allows them to receive real world news in a high interest and age appropriate way. Each week, students are able to participate in a debate based on the information provided in the magazine. Students pull out facts and think about the pros and cons for each topic and work with their peers to plan their debate.
Students will also be able to analyze mathematical situations and provide solutions that apply to a real world setting, making them able to compete with others. This will be done with the DynaMath magazines.
