Amid the hustle and bustle of Common Core and high-stakes testing, music ed shines in the hearts and minds of my kids. The students of my school are excited about music. The school is situated in an urban area in Ohio, and our students come from the surrounding inner-city community. They come from homes that struggle to make ends meet; additionally, many children are ESL learners. The children and their families look to us, the teachers and school, to provide them with learning materials and opportunities that will help them to be academically successful. We, the teachers, do our best every day to deliver high-quality education to all of our students. Music education can play a unique role in unifying our students across language barriers, as music is a universal language. My goal is to establish a classroom that utilizes modern technology to engage students through visual and kinesthetic modes, as well as aural.
