I work with special education students that range in age from 3 to 22 years. Each of our students has strengths and unique characteristics that makes them lovable, but also has strong deficits that set them apart from their typical peers. They are integrated in a public school, some in typical classrooms, and others in a special day classroom with some time in their typical classroom. In my experience working with this population, if they have trouble clearly communicating their needs, they use more effective methods, such as yelling or screaming, or even hitting! However, with patience and the right resources, they can learn to use sign language and pictures to get those needs met in a more acceptable way.
