My students come to my reading intervention class because they struggle with reading. By the time they've reached middle school, they're aware that they are behind. Some have developed negative attitudes about reading. Some are self-conscious. It is my job to increase their reading scores, and the best way to do that is make them WANT to read. That's where Donors Choose comes in.
Let's face it- textbooks are boring. If we want kids to enjoy reading, they need good books. And they need books with protagonists who look like them! (Most of my students are Black, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander.) The grants I receive from Donors Choose are used for this purpose.
And it's working! During this crazy pandemic school year, 73% of my students still made high growth from fall to spring on their assessments! It's amazing- the impact that can be made by good books.
