It is not enough for our students to merely read, write and comprehend. This year in English II we will work together to discover the power of language. We can use our reading, writing and critical thinking skills to stand up against injustices. We will not only to be empowered, but inspired to speak out.
Coming to school is a daily struggle for every one of my 10th-grade English II students. My students come from all over Baltimore city, where poverty, violence, and low achievement standards have plagued their academic experience. Even though my students are sophomores in high school, many of them are reading writing YEARS below grade level.
My school, like many public high schools in Baltimore, does not have the funding to provide my students with the resources that needed to fulfill their abundant potential. As the largest high school in Baltimore, we cannot afford a supplies budget for each classroom. As a first-year teacher, I do not have the funds to provide all these supplies!
