Our students struggle with all STEM subjects. They are so abstract and disconnected (or so the students think) from their day to day lives. These kits and the discovery that accompanies them will help our students not only learn the science, but remember seeing it in action.
Our students deserve to experience science in action, not just read about it! In 6th grade, students study simple machines. The kit would allow the teachers to show these in action instead of relying on descriptions or videos, and even allow the students to create their own. In 7th grade, students study kinetic vs. potential energy, bringing the force and motion kit into play for hands-on learning. 6th graders also study gravity in their astronomy unit. In 8th grade, all of these subjects are tested, making all three kits a perfect way for interactive review for students.
As a librarian, these kits will be able to be checked out by all teachers at all grade levels, expanding their usage outside of just one classroom. We are trying to create true learning experiences for every child in our building, and hands-on science is a valuable way to do this.
