Reading is something we do all the time. It's essential to life in our society. We read to learn. What happens for high school students who haven't yet learned to read? My students are bright, funny, charming children. They crave structure, attention, opportunities to shine. They come from many cultures including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, China, Puerto Rico, and Vietnam. Some have language learning disabilities, hearing loss, attention deficit disorder, or are on the autism spectrum. Some have endured serious trauma. All are funny, sweet, generous, and engaging children who want to learn. Many of my students are struggling readers. They are making progress, but we need opportunities for them to also be independent readers. Technology can help.
