I have a very energetic, very eager group of seven and eight-year-olds who are excited about learning new things. My students aspire to be doctors, professional skateboarders, pop stars, or the President of the United States. They come from many different backgrounds and bring a wide range of experiences to share. Our classroom mission statement exhorts that "We are exceptional. We are not ordinary. We will work hard to achieve our goals. We will support and respect each other. We are exceptional. We are not ordinary." And such will we be.
My school serves a population in which over 80% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Many do not have computers or Internet access at home. School is the place where they can get in touch with the increasingly global society in which we live. It is up to our school and my classroom to expand their minds and their horizons.
