My students desire to become better readers and writers. Everyday they are given opportunities to choose a spot in the room to work. Students will choose their desks with hard chairs, underneath tables with clip-boards, in the corner of the room against a wall, or simply lay on the floor. With this project, my students will not only be more comfortable, they will have a more welcoming environment to work in.
This project will help my students develop a greater love for learning.
A rug will be placed in the back and front corners of the room. Each of those corners will have bean bags, large balls, and soft rocking chairs. For the students who still want to work from their desk, cushions will be provided to promote longevity and comfort while learning takes place. For the students who sit in the corners of the room, reading pillows for their back and comfort.
When students go home to read or practice concepts learned in school, they work in bed, on a couch, at the kitchen table, or the living room carpet. This project will provide my students with that "at home" feeling that supports the learning that goes on at home. There is power in feeling confident, successful, loved, and important. This project will help my students feel those things and it will also generate a classroom community.
