At times, students are not comfortable in their standard school chair, which can easily distract him or her. Imagine a student with Autism, whose main distraction is their senses.
A student with Autism might feel an impulse to "stim" or rock back and forth continuously. Flexible seating, allows me to accommodate the students to ensure their needs are met. It allows students to find a seat where they are most comfortable. Once a student is comfortable, it is easier to engage the student in a lesson or activity.
Flexible seating has many benefits for the students including, decision making, collaboration, sensory input, etc. When giving students a choice to choose, they feel a sense of power; with this power comes responsibility. Once in a flexible seat, the student must follow rules and participate in the lesson or activity. Lastly, students will be fulfilling their sensory needs of stimming, bouncing and/or rocking back and forth.
