Growing bodies crave movement, which creates a challenge when students are asked sit and concentrate on an activity for more than ten to fifteen minutes at a time. Wobble Chairs support the idea of active sitting and engage the students’ core and leg muscles, which strengthens and increases blood flow. With increased blood flow students receive more oxygen to the brain, thus improving focus and retention.
Active seating allows students to self-regulate their need to move in a non-disruptive way while meeting their body’s need for movement. Currently, my classroom has one Wobble Chair. The student who primarily uses it has shown an increased ability to focus and is constantly moving without interrupting those around him, resulting in improved concentration, better behavior, and academic gains.
My students would use Wobble Chairs in our small group center rotations, reading groups, and as a positive reinforcement reward for meeting achievement and effort goals.
