At the end of the school year, when all state testing has been completed, curriculum is reviewed, and students are anticipating summer, I have found that a novel study is refreshing and exciting for my students.
Engaging students in a book study of 鈥淲onder鈥 by RJ Palacio will support the theme of treating others with kindness that I have been fostering throughout the school year. 鈥淲onder鈥 is a New York Times Best Seller that depicts a 10 year old boy, Auggie, who has a facial deformity and his experience entering a main stream middle school. In the novel, Auggie meets other students who treat him differently because of his appearance. 鈥淲onder鈥 includes themes of kindness, friendship, and integrity.
If my students-who all have various learning styles and needs-have a hard copy of the book as I read aloud, then they will be more engaged in this literary text. My students will be able to comprehend and analyze the text with corresponding novel study activities.
My students are I are looking forward to our "Wonder" book study at the end of the year. I would be grateful for the opportunity to enhance the learning experience and character development of my students.
