I work in a low socioeconomic community with children at the elementary school level who have varying types of learning disabilities. As a resource specialist, I help students who are in the general education setting needing additional support in order to successfully grasp grade level curriculum, whether struggling with academic, social, or behavioral demands.
Although most of my time is spent with children that have Individualized Education Plans (IEP's) that focus on each student's personal goals, I am also frequently presented with students that have not been "identified" as a student with a disability, but may have needs that must be addressed in order for them to successfully meet grade level criteria. Unfortunately, these students often fall between the cracks because there are not as many resources available to them. My goal is to offer my general education colleagues and their students support with new interventions, equipment, and/or resources benefiting ALL students.
