My Science students will explore, through an exciting interaction and behavior of the butterfly, Pieris rapae, with the quick-growing Brassica plants. Students will learn about the metamorphosis, growth and development of the butterfly as well as its dynamic interaction with the Brassica plant.
By exploring this amazing interaction of both plant and butterfly, students learn how real scientific investigations work. Students will collect and record the data on behavior and growth of both the plant and the butterfly in their science notebooks. This fits in so well with our unit on Ecology and animal behavior unit. Having a live organism in the classroom is an extraordinary experience for our students and broadens students awareness of life cycles, behavior and complex plant and animal interactions.
In this activity, students will care for and observe the metamorphosis of egg, larva, chrysalis and adult stages of the Pieris rapae butterfly throughout their amazing life cycles of 35 to 40 days.
