My students need a classroom library that provides them with interesting books that will inspire them to read more as well as books that will allow students to practice and master metacognition, close reading, and Question-Answer-Relationships reading comprehension strategies. This project will help provide students with the books needed for me to teaching them the skills necessary for enhancing reading comprehension. This is important because in 2015 the National Assessment of Adult Literacy reported that only 29% of fourth-grade students in Nevada read at or above the proficiency level. I hope and mission to increase this statistic within our state.
Students will have an opportunity to read interesting books at their grade level independently and in a small group collaboratively. When students have books they like and are able to read at their level, research has shown that they are more apt to do so. In addition, students that read well are more successful in all subject areas as a result. Reading is fundamental, so funding this project will only help young at-risk scholars have a better chance to excel and raise Nevada's proficient reader statistic.
