ESOL IV is the highest-level class for English Language Learners who are just about ready to exit sheltered ESOL instruction. While the texts they read should not be far from that of a regular high school English class, I have found that the classroom sets of texts available to my students just don't match the level of difficulty, language, and analysis that my students need.
After much research and debate, our class has chosen to read In the Time of the Butterflies, a gripping historical fiction novel about las tres mariposas of the Dominican Republic, who rebelled against and were martyrs of the Trujillo dictatorship. The themes it explores are complex, timely, and accessible to my students, and I'm so excited to delve into the text together!
