Step one, at least five GEO students and five Shasta Lake Garden Project members will take on a summer reading challenge by reading Andy Weir's The Martian, classroom edition. Students and Garden Project members will create post of fun summer time reading on the Shasta Lake Garden Facebook page. Some examples of postings of summer reading by the pool, at Shasta Lake, in a tent, or propped up in a lounge chair in the garden or deck. Extra research on soil conservation or reading Karen Herzog's, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article, Project brings a Mars farm plot to Wisconsin may be of interest.
Step two is a Back-to-School celebration for the summer readers. Cooking homemade french fries will be part of the celebration.
Step three the summer readers will encourage additional students to read the Martian. The summer readers and new readers will plan a field trip to learn about soil conservation and design a GEO research project that includes soil conservation and growing potatoes.
