Hi I am an art teacher, teaching in a high poverty urban area that I was born and raised in. Growing up the arts assisted me with my learning. Art helped me with complex thinking skills that I needed for Math and Science, so I am a big supporter of taking STEM and changing it to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). On a daily basis I try to get my students to understand that everything that they learn in school can be interrelated, Art and Design can be more impactful with the involvement of Math, Science and English, while Science, Math and English can be more retainable with Visual Arts. As as teacher, I want to make sure that I give my students experiences that helps them grow and become well-prepped adults. I want to give my urban students an experience in technology and art, that is comparable to their suburban counterparts. In addition to validating the purpose of art in secondary education.
