Learning a new language is hard, and English Language Learners become easily frustrated when they are asked to read and write in the new language. I want to create a cozy environment in the classroom where students feel excited to grab a book and read for fun! I want to offer this "cool space" as an incentive for their hard work, where they can select what they want to read, a book or a magazine, and sit comfortably to do it!
English Language Learners are more willing to read if they are given varied options, or if the materials have pictures and visuals that provide clues to help them understand the material they are reading. It also helps to have a designated place to read, where students can move away from distractions and can fully concentrate on the reading material. I plan to assess my students' reading comprehension in fun ways that won't make reading feel like a chore. I want to ignite a love of reading in my students, and I hope they become life-long readers and learners!
