When I heard about InspireCorps Founder Steph Thompson's 'Get in Tune' Workshop to help kids "find harmony through collaborative arts," I immediately wanted to bring her to work with my students.
Music is a great way to engage high school kids in discussion about their emotions. It makes it fun. By using a collection of drums and percussion instruments, and various games and 'jam sessions,' Steph really helps the kids relax into otherwise embarrassing and difficult topics. She uses the metaphors of rhythm and harmony to teach the students about how to get in tune with themselves, and get in tune with the other students and their community.
I'm especially excited for the workshop to help bring some Spanish-speaking students more in to the group, and to involve kids who are often shy to speak. Steph's use of music and art will offer opportunities for all the kids to find a way to express themselves and connect with the other students.
'Get in Tune' is going to be a great bonding experience for my group, so thank you for your support!
