We are a S.T.E.M. Academy; however, the majority of my students who enter my classroom have been given only minimal opportunity to experience science, technology, engineering, or math in their home life. Background knowledge is a limited resource and their experiences must often be created within the classroom using rich and engaging lessons.
The students within my classroom are mostly Hispanic. The neighborhood surrounding our school is all low income, and 100% of my students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Although many of my students have very challenging home lives, their attitude and willingness to learn is phenomenal. They are excited to be at school and explore S.T.E.M. concepts through experiences they are not provided at home. They jump at the opportunities to discover, get their hands dirty, and talk, talk, talk about it! Very importantly, they love to talk to their families about what they do, giving them the power to educate and change their neighborhood.
