My students struggle a lot with the social/emotional skills necessary to work with others, especially during unstructured activities. I have been building up my collection of choices since I accepted this position over the summer.
I teach daily lessons explicitly covering social skills, and I try make time for them to practice those skills at the end of the lessons. The school and district are extremely limited in these types of cooperative play choices that my students need. I have found an improvement in how frequently my students are written up at recess since initiating this model.
I have also included some fun learning activities for them to 鈥減lay鈥 on Fridays after a hard week of lessons, that still teaches the concepts needed to meet their annual IEP goals.
