I became a teacher because I want to impact children’s lives, and I became a history teacher because I see so much value in understanding the past. I have learned during my initial years in the profession that a 7th grader’s immediate surroundings represent a complex enough world. My goal is to broaden each of my students’ horizons by using the critical events and people who have shaped history as tools to foster the development of effective reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
The 21st century learner cannot be expected to simply sit still and listen; a student-centered classroom is a must if your goal is success for all who enter your room. Providing my students with the choice to stand at a desk, collaborate while sharing a bench or even letting them sprawl on the floor with cushions allows them to get comfortable and focus on the task at hand...success in my classroom.
