The Sculptor is a fantastic graphic novel written by Scott McCloud, and I was fortunate enough to get some copies of the book for my senior course this year. This year, however, we switched from semester courses to year-long courses, so I do not have enough copies of the book for all of my students to read it at home. I have made it work this year, but I would love to be able to have more copies of the book for next year so that I can have all of my senior classes doing the same unit at the same time. With remote and hybrid learning, it is critical that students are able to take the text home, and with COVID, it's a challenge to share materials in the classroom.
We do a deep dive into the graphic novel, and we study the themes, characterization, and symbols; we also apply Formalism and Feminist literary theory. We examine the juxtaposition of the images with the words, and really study the art itself.
My students were so engaged with reading this graphic novel, and they really worked hard at analyzing and understanding it.
