I have a wonderful and diverse group of students entering our first grade class. Each child is unique and learns in their own way. This year I will have a mix of 5 and 6 year olds. Their attention spans for learning will differ as well as their understanding of personal space.
Students deserve to have seating that will meet their needs and support their learning.
I am requesting the wiggle seats to support students working at their desks or sitting in a chair at a table. These seats allow children the opportunity to move while sitting! Which will also create the opportunity for longer times of focus to support growth in all academic areas.
Wiggle seats were originally created and used to support children with ADHD. In my last eight years teaching I have seen these seats be a successful tool for ALL learners, especially our young first graders.
The camp chairs create a comfortable personal space for each child while we are sitting together on the floor during group learning times, read alouds, and morning meeting. Personal space is a difficult concept to put into practice for young children, but an important one.
Over the course of my career I have tired many ideas: carpet squares, assigned seating, tape on the floor, etc. All of these ideas worked in some way but didn't completely support students being comfortable and also taking on the responsibility or learning what personal space is for themselves. I have seen these chairs used in a library setting during read alouds and lessons and would be thrilled to bring this idea to our classroom.
