Mario Umana Academy is a K-8 public school in the East Boston neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. The Umana is a level 1 school, Massachusetts' highest rating, and serves 1,100 students who are predominantly Latino. To meet the needs and interests of this community, the school is "dual language" - all Kindergarten through 3rd grade students learn in both English and Spanish. I teach K-5 Art including teaching all 2nd Grade Art classes in Spanish. I am new to the school this year but my goal is to draw on the school's culture of respect, kindness, and determination and inspire students to value empathy, craftsmanship, and creative problem solving.
