I teach twenty-four eager fifth graders. Our school is in a rural town in South Carolina and caters to a high-poverty population. My students come from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds and primary languages. Their backgrounds and lack of prior knowledge make it essential to provide them with first hand experiences whenever possible. Every day, I have the opportunity to open their eyes to the world around them, to introduce amazing literature, to show them the power of the pen, and to guide them as budding young scientists. Every day, I struggle with planning effective lessons that engage my whole class with materials that will ignite their passion for learning. Every day, I have to find ways to show them materials while simultaneously pinpointing learning experiences for them. This can be a struggle when a lack of materials is prevalent. It is my hope to instill in them a desire to find out more and a love of learning. This hope can be realized with the help of a document camera.
