Once my special ed. classroom had to move to remote learning this past March, my co-teacher Lauren and I moved quickly. Making sure students who needed chromebooks from school were provided with them. But, we also saw a need we didn't realize existed. Some of the students had ear buds, while some did not. I have purchased many sets of headphones for the classroom over the years from my personal funds. The ear buds are less expensive but should only be used by the same student. They are small and tend to get lost in the classroom. The over-ear headphones can be sanitized while at school but several students assumed the two sets I had were for only them. Students with Autism didn't understand that we needed to share those two pairs. And, if students need to work remotely this school year, they really need to have their own pair at home to focus on Zoom class, watch educational videos, and also respond verbally using the built in microphone. Many times, students would come to the Zoom, and the background noise from siblings, appliances, and other environmental distractions, caused them frustration, as well as their peers who are also on the Zoom.
