This project is about family engagement. Many of our students do not have access to high-quality open-ended toys in their homes. Some children spend up to six hours each day with screens- tablets, phones, or watching television. I know that young children need to play with appropriate toys to develop math, science, language, and problem solving skills.
With the support of generous donors, my team and I will host a family learning night to show families how to help their children learn with open-ended building toys.
We will invite parents and children to participate in exploration and play with a variety of building toys that we use at school. My colleagues and I will model how to use the toy sets and inform parents of the educational benefits of each set. We will also create handouts for parents giving tips and ideas to enrich play at home. Each family will be able to choose a toy to keep and use in their home.
