Over 80% of the students at my elementary school are living below the poverty level; a large percentage are Spanish speaking. Children who grow up in low socioeconomic conditions typically have a smaller vocabulary than middle-class children do, which raises their risk for academic failure (Walker, Greenwood, Hart, & Carta, 1994). Vocabulary building must form a key part of enrichment experiences for students, and teachers must be relentless about introducing and using new words.
Providing these students with non-fiction texts, rich with real-life photographs, will build a base of term knowledge that will be able to be built upon as the child rises through grade levels. Books will be purchased about the life cycles of plants, parts of a plant, storms, weather, etc. because in the the upper grades, these children will need to have this basic knowledge to understand the water cycle, pollination, and germination. Thank you, in advance, for your contribution to our project!
