Often times, talking about feelings can be awkward, but if the student is engaged and relaxed, whether through playing with a stuffed animal, drawing, making a shape with play doh, or coloring, the time becomes more meaningful, helping the adult mentor build relationships.
Folders, pencil, and erasers may not seem like much, but to a child who doesn't have these things, these items mean so much. We tend to take things like markers and glue for granted; you'd be surprised what fun these things can be in the learning setting.
