I teach at a Title One school where more than 80% of our students are economically disadvantaged. These are bright, joyful, wonderful students, but they face many obstacles and challenges that no child should. Unfortunately they are often known by the community for their struggles rather than their accomplishments.
I am excited to share that these students have risen above their struggles to become finalists in a national young entrepreneur's competition and become exemplars of the untapped potential that exists within our high-need school.
These students are leaders and role models, and their project - a business idea to create a school garden to provide their fellow students who do not have enough food to eat over the weekends with fresh, healthy options - exemplifies their big hearts and brilliant minds.
