As a speech-language therapist, I have the privilege of working with young learners to build their communication skills.
Throughout my therapy sessions and in-class groups, I use literacy-based instruction to build students' articulation, vocabulary, sentence structure, comprehension, and other communication skills.
Research has shown that students benefit from having books serve as windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors. This allows students to see themselves in books, gain exposure and knowledge to people that differ from them in one or more ways, and allows them to imagine themselves in the world created by the author.
By having a diverse and inclusive library, I can provide these experiences to my students while targeting their individual goals.
