My reading classes will be working with a variety of different reading materials that include textbooks, short stories, and novels. However, students learn best when reading or relating to something that has significance to them. While Johnny Tremain may be a classic read, it definitely doesn't hold the same appeal as reading about current events and topics that are important to 21st century students.
This is where a class set of Scholastic Scope will come in handy. I believe my students will be more engaged with the articles, short stories, dramas, and narrative nonfiction texts that are included in each issue of the magazine. Reading about a real teen's journey to the U.S., the popularity of social media, and debating over emerging technology will do more to engage students not only in the act of reading but will build critical skills necessary for their success in all subjects.
