While many school districts have enough computers or laptops for each student, our school does not. We currently have 1 cart (approx 25 Chromebooks) that is shared between 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, and located on the floor below us. In order to use these computers, we have to sign up in advance to reserve them for the day. On days when we have access to these computers, we then have to carry these computers up and down the stairs. Most teachers are able to use the devices once a month. Our middle school has approximately 500 students, so we can only provide Chromebook access to 1/20 of the students at any given time. The math and science department has access to additional computers, as well, but the English department has been overlooked in our need for technology.
If my classroom had a set of Chromebooks, it would benefit my students TREMENDOUSLY.
Rather than relying on the sparse access we are currently allotted, I would be able to assign and assess classwork and allow students to have regular access to everyday materials. Our state test is now all online, so the more access we have to the internet and computers, the better we will be prepared to take this test when the time comes. Many of my students do not have internet access via computer at home, therefore my class period is the only time that many are able to practice. We only have 1 class set of textbooks in my classroom, and having Chromebooks would give us access to our online textbooks and many more websites that have helped my students improve their reading comprehension skills. It was also provide access to Google Docs and Classroom which has proved to be an invaluable tool for online writing and editing.
