I teach wonderful young people in Richmond, California. My students are headed for great things: they are passionate, curious, and motivated. Most of them will be the first in their families to attend college, and as a school, we are committed to providing our students with all of the supports they need to go to college or pursue other paths.
In my 9th-grade English classes, 12th-grade government classes, and young men's advisory, we learn academic skills while working on agency, voice, critical consciousness, and leadership. We talk about critical issues in our society, and how we plan to make positive changes. We dedicate time to social-emotional learning, and week to week, I see my students growing in their capacity to understand themselves, relate to the world, and use their potential in the service of the community.
