I have 26 incredible English Language Learners in a Structured English Immersion classroom. They are astute and eager to learn. Their are not aware of their limitations, all the while, their families struggle to make ends meet. Our school population qualifies for school-wide free lunch.
Our school is located in a mixed lower socio-economic neighborhood, with many apartment buildings amongst single family homes. Some gang activity is evident, but the children still come to school with positive attitudes towards learning and having success in the classroom.
Collectively, my young learners are a chatty bunch, with a ton to say. It is their conversational skills (listening and asking questions on topic) that need continual nurturing. My kindergarteners have made enormous academic gains and would greatly benefit from receiving these additional books that appeal to their interests and engage their desire to construct meaningful conversations about their thoughts and interpretations.
