My students come from all over the world. Some are learning to read, write, and speak English, and it is important that they are able to focus and pay attention. Some of my students need to move around in order to maintain focus, but this may cause a distraction to others.
I work in a school where differentiation is key for student achievement. In order for all of my students to be successful, I must also take into consideration all of their needs, which includes the ability to attend for longer periods of time. We practice building stamina on a daily basis, but it is difficult for them to "sit" or "be still". Students are able to move around because it helps them focus and concentrate. I have seen students stretch out on the floor during a test or stand up and literally stretch and/or dance while working. The rule is they can do whatever they need to do get their brains and thoughts flowing as long as they don't disturb or distract their tablemates/classmates.
