With the introduction of one to one laptops in our classroom, my students end up at their desk for most of the day. They were getting uncomfortable and wiggly within a few minutes of instruction. With this observation, I have started implementing flexible seating in my room. 5th graders love to move and different seating options gives them this freedom.
I am excited to introduce more independent and community seating. Adding two more tall tables with stools will give more options for independent work. The laptop tables for the floor will allow for more independent work. Exercise balls will give those with extra energy the opportunity to bounce as they work to get some of their wiggles out. This will give students more options and enable them to better focus on their work both independently and in a group setting.
Currently, they only have two main options. Since there isn't enough for all students, they are only able to use the flexible seating every other day. I would love to increase the options so students can sit where they choose every day.
