My students are new immigrants to the US. They come from over 60 different countries and speak over 50 different languages. They are smart, sweet, respectful, kind, open-minded, and wise beyond their years.
I feel lucky to have the opportunity to work with my students. I learn so much from them, far more than I teach them.
Our school is a safe haven for immigrant students, but the world they live in is not. Just two years ago, a group of teens murdered an innocent man on Long Island, just because he was an immigrant.
Instead of being seen as inspired and inspiring young people who are here to better our country and their own lives, my students are often stigmatized, excluded, and misunderstood.
