Kids need to read! It is a skill that transcends all disciplines and will help them score higher on standardized tests, expand their vocabulary, increase their background knowledge and experience. The hardest thing is inspiring that interest in reading. Getting these books will really get my students excited about reading.
As a district we encourage reading heavily! All teachers in our school have students silent read at the begging and end of class when possible or after an assignment where not all students finish at the same time. Personally, I try to have students silent sustained read for 15 minutes a class. I do not always have the time to read that I would like, but I do as much as our schedule allows us. right now I have assigned an at home reading project for my students. Many of these kids don't have easy access to books at home, which is another reason I would love to provide them for the students.
