"Go sit on the carpet!" This a common expression I use multiple times a day. My 1st grade students and I spend a lot of our day doing whole group instruction and circle time in our group area. This is our safe space. Students learn new concepts, share new ideas and stories, play games, and most importantly feel connected to their learning space.
A rug creates an area within a classroom that feels like a small room; welcoming and inviting students to participate and learn together.
Students are developing social emotional skills that they missed out on by being online throughout kindergarten. The rug area in a classroom fosters so much of this learning!
