I want to teach "Monster" to my ninth graders next year because I have seen the joy my students feel at finishing an entire novel. This year, I taught Driver's Ed by Caroline B. Cooney to my students. When we finished reading the novel, one student looked up at me with pride and commented that Driver's Ed was the first novel he had ever read all the way through. For a lot of my students, this is a big accomplishment. Some of the content in this novel is unfortunately a reality in life for some of my students. I strongly believe that my students will be able to relate to the main character's experience in Monsters. As a result, they will be more invested in the novel.
Being a new school, we do not have a lot of the resources that other schools have accumulated over the years. Some of my classes have 33-35 students in them. With such large numbers it is hard to collect and fund materials like this on my own.
