My special education 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students are from a large city in the Midwest. Our school is 99% African-American and located in a very low income area. Even with all the experience and knowledge their city offers, my students live in the small and often bleak world of their neighborhood. Technology allows them to broaden their world and experience learning in the way that works best for them. Like most other students today, my students are immersed in technology all the time, and incorporating technology into daily lessons helps them engage with the material. Some of my students are non-readers, and for these students, technology allows them to access the same curriculum that their general education peers are learning.
