If I had to pick one word to describe my students, I'd have to pick resilient. Let me tell you why: I teach fifth grade at a Title I elementary school in the Central Valley of California. Many of my students are bilingual and English language learners. Some students struggle with financial difficulties and even homelessness. Despite this, my students are, in short, amazing.
They are smart, independent, funny, and resilient.
The challenges they face do not define their characters but enhance them. They come to school with smiles on their faces, ready to learn, despite the adversity they see in their home life. I sometimes struggle with the heartache and wish I could do so much more. As a fairly new teacher, I am finding out I can't do it all. But, what I can do is provide a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment for these most deserving children.
