Can the Rubik’s Cube be used as a learning tool? Yes it can! First, solving the Rubik’s Cube is about patterns and procedures, or what they call in math, algorithms. It needs to be completed in a specific sequence. As students are figuring out the method, they are continuing to learn about area and perimeter too. Second, in order to complete the puzzle you need determination and perseverance. This is something all kids need to learn and practice. Once the puzzle does get solved, the confidence radiates from the students and extends into other areas in and outside of the classroom.
The Rubik’s Cube is an engaging tool to learn about math and character building but can also extend into the arts as well as friendly competitions. While some students collaborate with others to complete the cube, still others are engaged in self-led matches to complete the cube with speed. Additionally, designs and mosaics can be created with several Rubik’s Cubes extending into art. The best way for student achievement is to engage them and the Rubik’s Cube is a good tool for just that while learning math, art, leadership and character.
